Woodford RFC rugby coach Phil White was one of a group of young coaches invited to spend time with members of the England Rugby squad.

The England players introduced them to their own coaches, who played a role in helping them become internationals.

White was inspired by his meeting with England player Joe Marler and his old Eastbourne RFC coach Will Stadler.

“Seeing the relationship between Will and Joe has been great, it has reminded me of the impact you can have on a player’s success, even at a young age,” White said.

“Having helped coach at my club for the past seven years, I have seen how making a session fun and safe can allow players to enjoy the sport more, which is very rewarding.”

The group discussed the role of the QBE Coaching Club, a joint initiative between the RFU and QBE, a business insurance specialist.

This initiative will see 2,015 new level two rugby coaches recruited and trained by September 2015.

The purpose of the initiative is to ensure the game has enough quality coaches to welcome new players and encourage them to carry on playing rugby.
