Fabio Liverani insists he wants to remain as Leyton Orient manager next season regardless of whether the O’s are relegated.

The Italian has two years remaining on his contract at Brisbane Road and owner Francesco Becchetti watched his team move closer to dropping down to League Two after attending Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Rochdale.

Speaking via a translator after Saturday’s 6-1 defeat at MK Dons, Liverani said: “I can confirm that I would stay even if we are relegated because the possibility to plan a season from the start the way I want with the players I want is great. It’s a project I will lead regardless of whether it's League One or Two.”

But when asked on Tuesday if he had been given any assurances about his future by Becchetti, Liverani insisted this would not be decided until the end of the season.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to the chairman after the game. I have to say the chairman has put in a lot of money into the club and is definitely the person that should be more disappointed than anyone else because he’s funding the club and receiving much less joy than he was expecting.

“Still again we have two games to go and we have to play those, do our very best and then after that we will draw a line and understand what will happen next.”

Liverani, who has won eight of his 25 matches in charge picking up a total of 28 points, added: “Nothing has changed. I’ve got two more years of my contract. Nothing has changed from my side.

“But I think we have to focus on these two games and see first of all if we can maintain in League One. If we don’t then I will sit down with the chairman and see what the budget is and decide all together.”

His side’s chances of remaining in League One are dwindling after a five-match winless run at the worst possible time.

Orient climbed out of the relegation zone after winning at Coventry City on April Fools’ Day. But the joke has been on the O’s since then after picking up just two points.

Three successive defeats have left Orient two points from safety with just two matches remaining.
