West Ham United attacking coach Teddy Sheringham has been given permission to discuss the manager's job with Stevenage, though current boss Graham Westley has not yet left.
Westley hinted after his side's League Two play-off defeat at the hands of Southend United he may leave the Hertfordshire club when his contract expires.
"The chairman and I spoke a couple of weeks ago and it's conceivable I won't get to work with these lads any longer," Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio.
"My contract runs out at the end of the month and it's not been decided what's going to happen there."
And Sheringham, who joined the Hammers as a part-time attacking coach last summer, has been given permission to discuss the role with Stevenage.
The 49-year-old, who was at one stage an even money price to succeed Fabio Liverani at Leyton Orient, has not managed before.
