Following the disastrous 2-2 draw against Astra Giurgiu in the Europa league, West Ham United lost their final friendly before the start of the new Premier League season, 2-1 to Werder Bremen in the Betway Cup on Sunday.

The Hammers did take the lead, though, as Diafra Sakho was the fastest to react to a low Dimitri Payet cross from the right-hand side in the 19th minute.

However, the lead was given up softly just a minute later as Anthony Ujah’s ambitious effort from 30 yards spilled through the arms of goalkeeper Adrian and into the West Ham net.

In the 31st minute Ujah added his second, this time without the help of the goalkeeper, powering a shot out of Adrian’s reach and into the far corner. After half time the game lost much of its verve as both sides rung the changes, a custom of all pre-season friendlies.

Hammers manager, Slaven Bilic, introduced four players after half time; replacing Adrian, Carl Jenkinson, Reece Oxford and Payet with Raphael Spiegel, James Collins, Diego Poyet and the newly-signed Manuel Lanzini.

Soon after a good save by substitute keeper Spiegel, Bilic made five more substitutions as Josh Cullen, Morgan Amalfitano, Doneil Henry, Modibo Maiga and Kyle Knoyle were all introduced; whilst Bremen made three of their own.

Unsurprisingly, then, the game rather disappointingly petered out and Werder Bremen won 2-1, winning the Betway Cup in the process.

West Ham United: Adrian (Spiegel 46), Tomkins, Kouyate (Maiga 63), Zarate (Cullen 63), Jenkinson (Collins 46), Sakho, Noble (Amalfitano 63), Ogbonna (Henry 63), Payet (Lanzini 46), Oxford (Poyet 46), Page (Knoyle 63).
