Redbridge failed to transfer their impressive start in the Isthmian Premier Division into the League Cup and were dumped out of the competition at the first hurdle on Tuesday, losing 3-0 at home to Cheshunt.

Heading into the match the Motormen had picked up seven points from a possible nine in the league and lay 14 places above their opponents, who have suffered two defeats in their first three league games.

Redbridge were hoping to gain some sort of revenge after being beaten by Cheshunt in round two of the competition last season.

But they had clearly not learnt from that 2-1 defeat and Cheshunt broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when midfielder Luke Marshall finished comfortably past goalkeeper Ryan Karrer.

Marshall was almost able to double the lead for the Ambers after attempting an audacious lob which did not come off.

Cheshunt went 2-0 up when former Waltham Abbey striker Jason Hallett made no mistake from the penalty spot after a visiting player had been brought down.

Redbridge looked to get back into the contest in the second period and their best chance fell to Vinny Murphy, who could not find the target with just the keeper to beat.

The Ambers rounded off the victory with a third goal late on with a header from a corner after Karrer had pushed George Pullen's fierce effort over the bar.
