Teenage Woodford Green with Essex Ladies runner Canaan Solomon won the Intermediate Boys 800m title at the Sainsbury’s UK Schools Games in Manchester.

The 16-year-old middle-distance runner led the race out himself at Sports City in Manchestergoing through the 400m marker in 53 seconds. In the final 200m Solomon was challenged by Cameron Steven, winner of the England Championship the previous weekend, but he triumphed in 1.53.30 in cold, windy conditions.

Coach John Stow believes that was Solomon’s best race performance so far.

There was also an England Championship Under-17 silver medal for Shayne Dewar in the 200m.

Dewar added the England Championship silver to his recent Southern title. Competing at Bedford, he recorded another personal best over 200m with 21.74 secs (+1.4).

Scott Webster competed in the high jump in the same championships and placed eighth with a time of 1.86m.

Another competing for a title was Tom Beedell, who won the 3,000m steeplechase in the Essex Championships.

Beedell crossed the line in 9.36.2, which marks a significant improvement for the Woodford Green athlete and a mark which suggests he is not far from his best.
