Leyton Orient lost 3-2 in the EFL Cup first round as they fought back against Fulham at Brisbane Road after they went 3-0 down.

Goals from debutant Dennis Adeniran and a Cauley Woodrow double was enough for the away side to progress to the second round.

But O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler’s second half substitutions of Dean Cox and Paul McCallum proved the most effective as McCallum scored twice from Cox’s assists.

Nigel Atangana also provided the bite in midfield as he was subbed on in the 73rd minute which will give Hessenthaler a tough choice of who starts on Saturday, August 13 against Newport County at home.

It was the O’s striker Ollie Palmer who got the first chance of the game as he almost pounced on a weak pass from Adeniran as he forced a throw deep into the Whites half in the seventh minute.

Both sides looked lively from the outset and it looked as though Scott Parker could open the scoring as he volleyed a shot from the edge of the box which was held well by O’s keeper Sam Sargeant.

A minute later, Palmer flicked a header onto Gavin Massey who controlled the ball well before seeing his shot blocked behind for a corner which was cleared by the Fulham defence.

Lasse Vigen Christensen got a ball across in the O’s half in the 15th minute and he found Woodrow who had a weak shot after he beat his marker.

Orient quickly responded as they pushed a long ball forward and Palmer flicked the ball on to Harry Cornick but his shot went wide of the post.

Vigen Christensen got the better of Yvan Erichot down the right side of the pitch and he crossed the ball well into the box but no one was there to meet the loose ball.

In the 22nd minute Palmer’s persistence shone through as he passed the ball to Massey and Cornick in the middle of the box who both failed to get a shot away before Sandro Semedo had an effort deflected wide.

Adeniran then reaped the rewards for the away side in the 29th minute as he headed home from a Sean Kavanagh corner but he was then yellow carded by referee Andy Davies for his celebration with the Fulham fans.

Woodrow however failed to make it 2-0 for the Whites as Sessegnon delivered a brilliant ball into the O’s penalty area but he was unable to get a touch from six yards out.

Four minutes from the break Palmer optimised a great run to get in behind the defence before he pulled back for Kelly but his shot was saved by Jesse Joronen.

Palmer then followed up with a chance of his own but he took too long to cross into the box to a free Cornick and his shot was deflected out for a corner.

Fulham doubled their lead in the 51st minute as Sargeant was beaten on his left hand side as Woodrow smashed a free-kick from 36 yards into the net.

Three minutes later, Woodrow added his second and the championship side’s third and he slotted home from a tight angle.

Lucas De La Torre then found some space in the box in the 59th minute but his fizzing shot was blocked and cleared by the Orient defence.

Cox and McCallum came on to a great response in the 62nd minute from the home fans.

Woodrow tried for a third 22 minutes from full time as he attempted a pop outside from the box but this time Sargeant was equal to his effort as he was there is gather the ball.

However it was McCallum who scored the next goal as he pulled one back for the hosts as he headed home from a Cox corner.

Palmer almost scored a second for Orient in the 78th minute as Massey set the ball for the striker who stung the hands of Joronen with a powerful strike.

Orient kept pushing and made it a thrilling cup tie in the 81st minute as McCallum scored after a quality cross from Cox as the striker headed into the net which showed how much E10 missed them last season.

But the championship side almost made it 4-2 as the ball was cutback to Woodrow but Pollock managed to get back and blocked the ball well to deny the Fulham player a hattrick.

Chances came in thick and fast from the O’s in the dying minutes of the game but it was to no avail as the game ended with Fulham progressing on.
