Leyton Orients new boss Alberto Cavasin lost his first match in charge 1-0 against Southend United at Roots Hall Stadium in a Checkatrade Trophy Group G fixture.

Marc-Antoine Fortune scored the only goal of the game in what was a game full of little chances from either side.

Orient have now lost their top spot following their 3-1 victory over Stevenage and will need to defeat Brighton & Hove Alboin Under-23s to progress.

Cavasin made six changes from their weekend fixture against Barnet as the Os have a highly contested month in the League coming up with Portsmouth up first on Saturday.

Ulrich Nnomo showed his pace through the field as he found a slick pass to Gavin Massey but Ryan Inniss got back well and the resulting corner came to nothing.

Liam Kelly down well to win the ball in the midfield in the 12th minute and Nnomo brought it forward and took a shot but it went well over the Frank Walton stand.

The first 15 minutes did not really bare much chances Kelly’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Aron Pollock and Tom Parkes sliced his effort wide with Robbie Weir also lining up for the shot.

Ollie Palmer won a free-kick five minutes later and Kelly swings the ball into the box but no one can meet the impending cross and it goes out for a free-kick.

Former O Luke O’Neill had the best chance of the half as he found himself space on the pitch and flashed a shot wide from outside the area from 20 yards.

Pollock did well to get back after O’Neill once again provided a dangerous cross into the box and their corner came to nothing and a free-kick was given.

Inniss provided another good chance for the home side and rose the highest in the box from a Ben Coker free-kick but his header was saved by Sam Sargeant and he had another chance a minute later but this time it went wide.

Ryan Leonard missed an opportunity to score the first goal as he is inches from tapping the ball into the net but instead he smashed it into the side netting.

In the second half, Orient fans cheered and chanted for Alan Dunne as he became a second half substitute in his first appearance for the club since the 2015-16 season under Ian Hendon.

Nnomo took the first chance of the second as he met substitutes Jans Janse’s cross but it went just over the bar and then it was the turn of Jordan Bowery who met another from the latter’s cross but Mark Oxley parried the shot away in what was the best chance of the match so far.

In what seemed to be the only highlight around the hour mark it took the fourth official three attempts to get the Shrimpers substitute correct as Adam King finally comes off for Will Atkinson.

Janse continued to try and create some spark and curled ball in from the right for Palmer but his header was gathered by Oxley.

The chances seemed to be all Orient and a quick one-twobetween Janse and Dunne saw a great cross from the latter and Nnomo headed wide when he should have scored in the 68th minute.

Fortune had a great chance to open his blues account but Stephen McLaughlin’s cross evaded the striker.

And another chance came in quick succession for the home side as Coker is released in the area and the full-back fizzed a low ball across which is put behind by Pollock.

But it was Fortune who found the back of the net and broke the stalemate as he turned in the area and fired in via the far post.

Jay Simpson came on to the sound of boos from the Shrimpers faithful as he did not make a summer switch to the club during the transfer window.

Southend managed to defend well to the end to record their second victory in the cup and progressed onto the next round.
