New Leyton Orient boss Alberto Cavasin was happy with his team’s performance despite the fact they fell to a 1-0 loss to Southend United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Marc-Antoine Fortune scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute as he found space in the Os box to turn and fire in at the back post.

Having only spent one training session with his new club, the Italian boss knows there is work to do but is relishing the challenge of the job he knew he had just over 48 hours ago.

“We played well in the first twenty minutes of the first half very well, I am pleased with the performance, knowing that the team have never played in this way, on the floor, was also good,” said the 60-year-old.

“I think that the improvement of this team can pass through tfhis way of play. We know we need to score more goals in the second half we created two chances.

“I think when we improve our way of playing, playing on the floor, the chances will increase.

“We played against a team who was in League One and I think that we played at the same level.

“I have no doubt these kind of players are able to play on the floor, we have had just one training and I ask them to do it by asking once and it is a miracle.”

The former Lecce boss, whose last management role was with Sampdoria in 2011, wants to help Orient achieve promotion back into League One and wants to help the club improve.

He added: “I want to help the club in terms of a manager. The club called me to come in and improve the team.

“I think if we play faster and take advantage of all our qualities, we can definitely improve the results.”

There was talk last week from Hendon and Kevin Nolan, who took over from the former Os player and also received his marching orders , said there was interference from up above about who picks the team selection.

But Cavasin admitted he has not talked about this situation with owner Francesco Becchetti and he will also look to adapt formations once he has had more time with the players.

“I have not spoken with the chairman about this topic, but I picked the team against Southend, so this is my first formation and my first XI and it is up to me who I start,” he added.

“The squad of this calibre can also play 4-3-3, we have had just one training so the changes will be in the future. We want to change the way of playing within the team.

“I do not want to change the formation too quickly to cause problems for the players.”

The Os boss will face Portsmouth at Brisbane Road in his first League Two match in what is a hotly contested October for the E10 Club and Cavasin cannot wait to see his team play at his new home.

The former Fiorentina boss said: “I am very excited, I look forward to the game and for everything here.

“I was looking for the excitement of being a manager. So I am living this experience like it was my first one when I was 30-years-old.

“I trained in Italy for more than 20 years and I lost my motivation as I did everything there. Here everything is new, everything is important, everything is exciting.

“I have lots of energy. Everything is a challenge as I do not know the language and I will start learning English intensively.”
