Michail Antonio says he felt embarrassed after West Ham United surrendered a 2-1 lead in the dying stages at White Hart Lane to lose against Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane scored in the 89th minute before converting a stoppage time penalty to condemn Slaven Bilic’s side to a devastating defeat on Saturday.

West Ham had twice led through Antonio’s first half header and Manuel Lanzini’s spot kick before their late collapse left Antonio understandably devastated.

“I feel embarrassed because we know the importance of this game to the fans,” he told the club website.

“We’ve done well. We’ve got the lead, they’ve come back, we’ve got the lead again and we’ve held out until the last seven minutes of the game.

“If we’d held on, we’d have got a good win, moved up the table and moved on, but instead we made mistakes.

“We thought we’d won the game but we switched off. That’s all I can say.”

Antonio is the Hammers’ top scorer this season as his opportunistic header took his tally to six goals, but says the joy of scoring was erased by the loss.

“The feeling when I scored was special, but that feeling has gone now,” he said. “All I am feeling is pain. It’s just one of those things and we need to start over again.”

His strike mattered little on a desperate day for West Ham, which saw them finish the game with 10 men after Winston Reid was sent off for two bookable offences.

The centre-back will now be suspended for the visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday.

Antonio admits Reid’s absence will be a big blow for the club, but is hopeful one of West Ham’s back up squad members can fill the void left by the reliable Kiwi.

He said: “Winston will be a massive miss because he’s a big part of our team. He played well and we need the players who are playing consistently well and he’s one of them.

“Now someone else is going to have to step up and show their best.”
