West Ham United’s impressive away displays against bigger opponents last season can provide inspiration for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford, says Aaron Cresswell.

The Hammers picked up wins on the road against Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool during the 2015/16 campaign.

With a tough fixture schedule coming up, including back-to-back matches against Manchester United and games against the Gunners and Liverpool, Cresswell understands the importance of replicating last season’s form.

“Of course it would be nice to do that, but we know it is going to be very tough, especially going there twice in four days,” he told the club website.

“There are no easy games in the Premier League, whether you’re playing Liverpool or Chelsea, or one of the teams at the bottom.

“We know as professionals we need to get as many points as we can and hopefully we can do that on Sunday.”

As a Liverpudlian, a trip to Old Trafford is always likely to stir greater emotion in Cresswell.

However, he insists rivalries will be the last thing on his mind when he steps out to take on Jose Mourinho’s side.

He said: “I wouldn’t say it was more meaningful. Of course, growing up there was a big rivalry between Liverpool and Man Utd.

“I want to go there, do as well as I can and try to win the game.”

After a disrupted start to the season, which saw him miss three months after picking up an injury in pre-season, Cresswell has quickly rediscovered his form.

A new position as a left-wing back is allowing him to express himself in a more attacking role and the 26-year-old is enjoying being back in action.

He said: “It’s certainly one I like – I like to get forward as much as I can and you’ve also got to be defensively minded as well when the opposition are on the attack.

“For me, I’ll play in whatever formation the gaffer wants.”

Cresswell has taken to the role with ease and a string of impressive displays after returning to the team in October led to his first international call up.

A debut followed in the 2-2 draw against Spain at Wembley and Cresswell is eager to push on and make the England left-back slot his own.

“I’d been to Wembley to watch England years back, when we played Wales. It’s one of the best stadiums in the word, with over 80,000 fans there for the Spain game. It was fantastic,” he said.

“It must be one of the toughest for competition, position-wise at the minute. There’s Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand, Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines, Kieran Gibbs.

“There’s plenty there, but the main thing for me is to concentrate on West Ham and play my best here.”
