Wapping Hockey Club’s ladies drew 2-2 with St Albans Seconds at Lee Valley, maintaining their second spot in the East Premier Division.

The teams started the day on equal points with the home side just ahead of their opposition due to a superior goal difference.

The visiting side started brightly and soon went 1-0 up. But this sparked Wapping into life and Lotta Paulus found herself in space to collect a pass from Aisling McKeon.

Paulus played the ball on to Jordan Mulvaney, who clipped it over the St Albans keeper to equalise.

After the goal, Wapping found their stride with the midfield trio of Belinda Armstrong, Lucy Todd and McKeon linking up seamlessly.

But despite chances from both sides heading into the break, neither could take the lead.

Wapping started the second period strongly but their numbers were soon reduced when McKeon, O’Sullivan and Ciara Murphy all spent stints in the sin-bin.

And with 15 minutes to go, St Albans took the lead again with a well-executed short corner routine.

But Wapping did not give in and pressed from the front as they searched for the equaliser, pushing their opponents into their own half.

The equaliser came in the dying seconds when McKeon was tackled at the top of the St Albans circle.

A short corner was awarded and captain Todd clinically slotted home to the delight of her team.

It was the third time this season Wapping ladies have converted a short corner on the full-time whistle.

Wapping’s men’s Seconds were confident heading into their game against Harleston Magpies following their 8-0 home win against Blueharts the previous weekend.

But from the outset it was clear the hosts weren’t going to have everything their own way.

Midfielder James Byford and stand-in right-back Nick McLaren came under pressure in the first ten minutes of the match.

However, Bobby Watson relieved the tension when he converted a testing cross from Byford into the back of the net on the half-volley.

However, Harleston came straight back from a free-hit outside of Wapping’s 22-metre line. The visiting forward converted calmly for the equaliser.

Wapping were rocked and for a 10-minute spell their usually sturdy defence was struggling with keeper Chris Monger coming to their rescue.

In the second half, each team’s tactics seemed to cancel the other out.

Solid runs down the right from McLaren and good link-up play with Dom Oliver caused the visiting defence problems.

Johnny Madill had a golden chance from the penalty spot but his shot was off target, going wide of the post.

The home side were fortunate in the dying minutes of the match when the umpire allowed them to re-take a penalty corner.

Watson knew he would not miss a second time, having flicked the ball high and left of the goal from the first, and duly fired in with a drag flick with only 30 seconds remaining.

Old Loughtonians ladies lost 3-2 to Norwich Dragons.

The first half was a fast paced affair with the Dragons scoring first from a short corner. But Loughts quickly responded.

They were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Alice Melvin equalised.

The game continued with quick counter-attacks from both sides and with under four minutes remaining before the break, Loughts scored their second through Jenny Farrow, who swept the ball past the keeper.

The second half started like the first but the home side did not have as much fortune in front of goal.

This led to the Dragons equalising through a deflection off of a raised ball, before they sealed the win with five minutes remaining.

There was also bad news for the men, who failed to get out of the starting blocks in their 3-0 defeat to City of Peterborough.

Waltham Forest ladies fell to a 4-1 defeat to East London ladies but the Seconds beat East London Thirds 2-1. The Fourths also won 3-0 against Loughts Fifths. The men’s Firsts and Seconds were beaten 5-0 and 5-3 by Crostyx Seconds and City of Peterborough Seconds respectively.
