West Ham United moved out of the Premier League relegation zone as they held title-chasing Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Dimitri Payet’s free-kick and Michail Antonio’s seventh goal of the season gave the Hammers a half-time lead after Adam Lallana had opened the scoring early on.

Divock Origi made the most of Darren Randolph’s error to notch his fourth goal in four games to level the scores just after the restart.

The result takes United back up to 17th after Swansea City’s 3-0 win against Sunderland yesterday had seen them fall into the bottom three.

They will hope to build on the point when they face Burnley at London Stadium on Wednesday before hosting Hull City next weekend.

United came into the game on the back of a dreadful run of form which had seen them fail to win in the League since October.

Their hopes of ending that run were dented inside five minutes as Lallana was given the freedom of the West Ham penalty box to open the scoring.

Liverpool’s number 20 drifted into space, controlled Sadio Mane’s low cross from the left and guided a half-volley across Darren Randolph.

The ease with which Lallana found space eight yards from goal would have infuriated Slaven Bilic as his side gifted the Premier League’s most prolific side a dream start.

In truth, the hosts failed to build on their early advantage, however, and West Ham began to grow into proceedings as they recovered well from their shaky start.

They were level after 27 minutes as Payet produced a trademark free-kick after Lallana fouled Pedro Obiang some 30 yards from goal.

The Frenchman curled a sublime effort towards the bottom left corner of Loris Karius’ goal which the Liverpool keeper could not keep out despite getting a strong hand to.

The German, who was criticised for an error which gave Bournemouth a late winner last week, would have been disappointed to be beaten by Payet’s effort.

The leveller was just reward for a fine recovery from West Ham and some slack Liverpool defending ensured they went in ahead at the break.

A hopeful long ball forward from Havard Nordtveit glanced off the head of Jordan Henderson and skipped beyond Joel Matip as he struggled to keep his balance.

The loose ball bounced invitingly for Antonio in the box and he calmly flicked beyond the onrushing Karius to make it 2-1.

Matip almost made up for his error in the dying stages of the half as he got on the end of James Milner’s driven corner, but could only head against the bar.

Having started the first period slowly, West Ham failed to learn from their lesson and were pegged back within two minutes of the restart.

Again an individual error was at the heart of the goal as Mane’s dinked cross from the right slipped through the grasp of Randolph.

The ball fell invitingly for Origi and the Belgian tapped into the empty net from six yards via the upright to restore parity.

The equaliser allowed Liverpool to grow in confidence and they dominated the following 15 minutes as Georginio Wijnaldum and Origi both went close.

Randolph may have been at fault for the Liverpool equaliser, but the Republic of Ireland international showed his finest form to deny Henderson.

The Liverpool captains strike from range looked destined to find the top right corner before Randolph threw out a hand to tip the ball over the bar.

It was the closest either side came to a winner as West Ham dug in and withstood late Liverpool pressure to take a valuable point on the road.

With Manchester united being the only other team to take anything from Anfield this season, the Hammers will no doubt be pleased with the result given their horror start.
