Dimitri Payet has reportedly held talks with West Ham United in order to convince the club’s hierarchy money is not the motive behind his desire to leave.

The France international is eager to return to former club Marseille and the Ligue1 side have had bids of £19m and £20m turned down by the Hammers.

Payet, who earns £125,000 a week, claims he wants to leave East London because of ongoing family issues rather than financial gain.

The 29-year-old’s wife and three children are said to have found life in England challenging since Payet moved to West Ham in 2015 and are currently living in France.

West Ham have no plans to sell Payet, who was named the club’s player of the season last term, and are happy for him to remain at London Stadium until the summer.

A bid closer to the region of £30m is likely to test their resolve but Payet may well be forced to stay.

He is currently excluded from all first team activities and is being made to train with the club’s under-23s after refusing to play last week.
