Leyton Orient boss Danny Webb believes his side deserved more from the game in their 1-0 loss to Morecambe at Brisbane Road.

It took a Paul Mullin’s worldie goal in the 74th minute to snatch the win when he curled the ball into the top corner from outside the penalty box.

Orient were the brighter of the two sides in the first half with Gavin Massey, Tom Parkes and Victor Adeboyejo all missing out on the chances to break the deadlock.

Webb said: “I think we deserved something from the game. I have got to be careful and not roll out all of the managerial clichés.

“But rightly or wrongly I have gone into this job with my own sort of structure for the club in my head.

“Partly foolish thinking, people might say it is but I think the best clubs and the best teams even in our League now have had a structure and if it is a step back and two forward so be it.

“I don’t mean relegation by step back two forwards, sometimes it is just a few defeats to get your message across.

“My first thought in my head before my first day’s training was we need to get a little bit of togetherness in this place.

“We need a little bit more of a team spirit, little bit of comradery, a little bit of fight, just to get these punters on our side a little bit more.

“I think we have done that. I understand the frustrations of not picking up any points in the last two games.

“I am fully behind that as, as a manager you want to see yourself try and claw yourself up that league.

“But I have to be perfectly honest and say that Saturday and today I have been proud of a lot of those players, if not all of them.

“I am bigging up a lot of the youngsters, they are looking like men out there. And the ones who are senior pros, they are helping them as well.

“I want to show all these O’s fans that we are going to stick at it, we are going to keep going. I think it is a different story if they have seen two performances and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

“And also writing off the season. But there is a light at the end of that tunnel and we have some good youngsters coming through here.

“I think the future of the club on the pitch is looking good, hopefully we can get a few points before we get caught adrift.

When asked about the special goal scored that eventually beat 19-year-old Sam Sargeant Webb said: “I thought he was excellent. I understand the criticisms that I have taken from people about the goalie change.

“But you have to make decisions and I am quite willing to make these tough ones. I think tonight you saw what a good goalie he is and what he will prove to be.

“He is 19-years of age. He is technically a scholar as is Victor (Adeboyejo), Sam Dalby, Myles Judd and Sandro (Semedo) is not long out of it.

“And then you are looking at Parksey (Tom Parkes) who still early 20s and looking at him as a senior pro.

“They are young, and I knew with all the things the fans have seen and gone through, it is hard to have that optimism. I totally get that.

“But I will tell them now, they have a lot to be hopeful for with some of these players coming through.”

The 33-year old was also questioned on why Alex Cisak failed to make the bench once again, having missed Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Carlisle United, with Charlie Grainger taking that spot.

“I think Charlie Grainger has been frozen out for a while. I am a big believer of having a sub goalie on the bench but I am also a firm believer more times than not you will not need that sub goalie,” said the former Southend United player.

“I just felt initially, while Sarg is playing, just give Alex a bit of a break. Not once has he missed a game or thrown in a mood or pulled a sickie or missed a day’s training.

“I think initially you go just have a few weeks out of it completely just too sort of chill out a little bit really.

“And as for Charlie I think he deserves a place on the bench as well. We have three good goalies and that is one area where we do have good strength in depth, I will say.

“Alex has been in that team and made some good saves this season. I am sure Charlie was playing he would make some good saves.

“I am not saying Sam Sargeant and that is why he is playing, if he made mistakes tonight I would have still justified playing him.

“Because he is a good goalie, I think you saw how he started off a lot of our attacks. And that is what he can bring to the team.”

Orient face Yeovil Town on Saturday, February 11 with a 3pm kick-off at Huish Park.
