Michail Antonio believes his fine form with West Ham United has put him in contention to earn a recall to the England team.

United’s 26-year-old utility man leads the club’s scoring charts with eight goals this season and has been a key part of Slaven Bilic’s side’s recent renaissance.

Antonio earned his first call-up to the national side in August last year but was an unused substitute in the Three Lions win over Slovakia.

He feels his current form, which has seen him form an unlikely strike partnership with Andy Carroll, could be enough for him to make the cut for next month’s clashes with Germany and Lithuania.

“I am going to keep playing my game and if I get called up it will be great. I am not going to let it affect me and if the manager feels I have done enough he will name me in the squad,” he told the Hammers website.

“I have been part of the set-up before but I didn’t get to play. I just need to keep doing what I have at West Ham and hopefully I will get my opportunity.”

Antonio struggled to make an impact in the Hammers’ 2-2 draw with West Brom on Saturday as Carroll missed out through injury.

Carroll’s own form, which has seen him score six times in his last 11 Premier League games, has led to the 13-time capped forward playing his way into contention for a recall.

England boss, Gareth Southgate, will surely have to consider the 28-year-old for his squad should he regain fitness, and Antonio has been suitably impressed with his team mate.

He said: “We missed Andy. West Brom are a big team and it would have been good to have his physicality on the pitch.

“We have to make sure he is ready for the next game. If Andy keeps playing the way he is he deserves a place in the England squad.”
