Robert Snodgrass’ Scotland kept their ailing hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Slovenia on Sunday.

The Tartan Army left it late to seal all three points at Hampden as Chris Martin scored the only goal of the game in the 88th minute.

Snodgrass played 75 minutes of the Group F clash before being replaced by Ikechi Anya in the vital win, which leaves Scotland fourth in the standings, five points behind leaders England.

The 29-year-old made history four days earlier as he became the club’s first Scottish international since Christian Dailly with an appearance in the 1-1 friendly draw with Canada.

Jose Fonte played the full 90 minutes for Portugal as the European champions eased to a 3-0 win over Hungary.

Andre Valente Silva got the ball rolling in the 32nd minute and a Cristiano Ronaldo brace sealed a routine three points for Saturday’s hosts.

Edimilson Fernandes was an unused sub in Switzerland’s 1-0 loss to Latvia, which allowed Portugal to reduce the gap to the Group B pace setters to three points.

Goals from Jamie Ward and Conor Washington were the difference in Belfast in a loss which leaves Norway a massive 12-points behind Group C leaders Germany.

A point did little to help Wales, who named James Collins among their subs, but, with the Republic being tied with Group D leaders Serbia, Randolph will be hopeful of securing safe passage to Russia next summer.

Finally, there were mixed results for Declan Rice as the Ireland under-19 international helped his side beat Italy 2-0 in their Elite Round qualifier.

However, they followed that result up with a 3-0 defeat to Sweden and need a win against Belgium and for Sweden to lose against Italy if they are to make the final.
