Macauley Bonne is targeting a 20-goal season for Leyton Orient after making a flying start to the campaign.

He took his tally of strikes this term to seven in eight games with a hat-trick against Guiseley on Saturday.

With the O’s wealth of attacking options, chances are hardly likely to be at a premium for Bonne this year and he is confident of reaching his goal.

“I set myself a target of 10 goals for Christmas and I think I am firmly on my way to that,” Bonne said.

“It is always the aim to be at 10 by the halfway point and then go and get another 10 after Christmas. That is 20 goals hopefully.

“My confidence is so high that I want to try and get three in the next week or so. I want to try and break my targets so I can play one step ahead of myself.”

Bonne’s trio of strikes also saw him register at Brisbane Road for the first time and continue to show the sort of form he has struggled to achieve previously in his career.

Indeed, he has almost doubled the return of eight strikes which he managed in his previous four senior seasons.

Bonne feels his current hot streak has much to do with being afforded a regular starting berth by O’s boss Steve Davis, which has in turn allowed him to find his rhythm.

“A player of my age needs a run of games and credit goes to the gaffer for giving me the chance. Hopefully I am proving to him that I can go and score more goals in this league,” he said.

“For any striker, once you get your first goal you feel confidence to go and get another and another and that is what I have done.

“I have seven now and I know I am not going to stop scoring, I know that myself, and I am confident. I can’t wait for the next game.”

Bonne’s hat-trick, which was the first by an O’s player at home in the league since 2006, featured two penalties which he finished with unerring accuracy.

Again Bonne says the manner in which he took them shows the form he is in.

He said: “It is not easy taking a penalty, let alone two in a few minutes.

“It shows where I am right now and my confidence with scoring goals that I am going to stand up and take them.”
