Waltham Forest experienced mixed fortunes as their men’s and women’s teams kicked-off their campaigns over the weekend.

Their men’s Firsts were no match for Wapping Seconds as they were hammered 5-0 in the season opener.

While they enjoyed a reasonable share of the possession, Forest could do little with it and were put to the sword by their more accomplished opponents.

It took a lapse in concentration from Forest to allow Wapping to score the go-ahead goal before they made their dominance tell.

Two goals in the space of two minutes before half-time all but killed the game as a contest and Wapping added two more strikes to seal a commanding win.

Martin Holden-White led the way in the victory as he bagged a brace to add to goals from Dom Oliver, Ray Paulson and Richard Ripper.

It was a more productive start to the season for Forest’s ladies Firsts as they showed determination to record a draw against Bromley & Beckenham Seconds.

They played well in both defence and attack, stringing together a number of flowing moves and keeping out multiple Bromley penalty corners, but couldn’t force a breakthrough.

Nonetheless a goalless draw provides a starting point for the season as they look to prosper in the Women’s East Division.

Wapping Firsts were made to settle for a share of the spoils as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Harleston Magpies.

Will Cairns got the goal on a frustrating afternoon for Wapping in match which saw Ollie Watts put on a man-of-the-match display.

Wapping started the better of the two sides and created a host of early chances, only to be denied an opening goal as parity remained in tact at half-time.

The Magpies opted to play on the counter attack in the second half and Wapping continued to control the tempo of the game.

They were hit with a sucker punch with five minutes to play, however, as Harleston made the most of a two-on-one to score.

Wapping refused to take the blow lying down and piled the pressure on in the closing stages, forcing a late penalty corner.

With plenty riding on the set piece, Cairns kept his cool and converted to secure a draw.

The ladies Firsts had no such troubles in breaking down their opposition as they thrashed Old Loughtonians Firsts 5-0.

A dominant performance saw Jennifer Allen, Bee Armstrong, Kate O’Sullivan, Katlynn Roganowicz and Aisling McKeon score.

The display was worlds away from the one which had seen Loughts beat Wapping in pre-season three weeks before their weekend league meeting.

Wapping were rewarded for a fast start with a short corner which Armstrong converted.

They were restricted to the 1-0 lead until the second half when Allen crossed for O’Sullivan to tap in an easy finish.

From that point on it was one-way traffic and Allen added a goal to her assist for the third with a powerful drive.

Three soon became four through Roganowicz and Wapping rounded off the win with a fine fifth.

Centre-half McKeon broke forward and drove into the D and, at the second time of asking, lashed home a superb effort with a reverse stick shot.
