A delighted Justin Edinburgh hailed a morale-boosting win after Leyton Orient overcame Sutton United which ended a 15 game winless National League run.

Title chasing Sutton were no match for Orient who eased to a 4-1 win - their first in the league since September - to give Edinburgh three points on his Brisbane Road debut.

The new boss praised his side’s hard work in the early throws of his tenure and believes the win is due-reward for their efforts.

“I am delighted. I spoke in my programme notes about how excited I was to be managing my first game at home and I certainly got the performance and result to go with it,” Edinburgh said, “I am pleased for everyone and it has certainly been a long time coming, I know that from before my time here.

“I think everyone connected with the club deserved that victory today and everyone played their part.”

While the win is a welcome one for the O’s, they are still heavily involved in the relegation conversation and sit three points above the drop zone.

Edinburgh, who was pleased with the commitment shown by Orient, is, therefore, fully aware of the need to build on the win over Sutton and pick up more positive results as soon as possible.

“We started on the front foot, were positive in our play and aggressive without the ball,” he said.

“It is not going to change overnight and this is a great performance but there is still a lot of work to be done. Having no midweek game allowed me to implement my plans.

“We have done well today and it is a small step forward, but one which we have to build on and make sure we produce this level of performance on a consistent basis now.”

Orient’s first chance to do exactly that comes on Saturday when they take on Haringey Borough away from home.
