Manuel Pellegrini is back in the Premier League after being appointed as David Moyes’ successor as West Ham manager.

The Chilean, who is well known from his time at Manchester City, has signed a three-year-deal at the London Stadium, after Moyes left the club last week after just six months in charge, having guided the Hammers to a 13th place finish in the Premier League this campaign.

Pellegrini will reportedly become the highest paid manager in West Ham’s history and returns to England having spent the last two years in charge of Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune, whose squad contains the likes of Ezequiel Lavezzi and former Arsenal man Gervinho.

During his three-year stint with Manchester City, the 66-year-old won both the Premier League and League Cup, while also guiding the Citizens into the semi-finals of the Champions League. However, he left the club upon the expiry of his contract in 2016 and was replaced by Pep Guardiola.

Pellegrini started his managerial career in South America and prior to his spell at City, also enjoyed stints in charge of Real Madrid, Villareal and Malaga among others.

Joint chairman David Sullivan told West Ham’s website: “I am delighted to welcome Manuel Pellegrini to West Ham United. He is one of the world’s most respected football coaches and we look forward to working with him.

“It was important that we appointed someone with knowledge and experience of the Premier League, who already has an understanding – not only of the teams and players we face – but of West Ham United and our ambitions.

“Manuel brings a reputation for attacking football and getting the best out of his players. We believe he will attract new talent to the London Stadium as well as improving the current squad.”

He added: “Above all, he is a winner, who knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level and is driven to continue that success. Manuel is the first West Ham United manager to have a Premier League title on his CV, and we believe that his experience, quality and proven record of taking teams forward quickly will ensure that he is successful here.

“We have listened to fans who asked us to be ambitious. We hope they agree it is an exciting appointment.”
