Manuel Lanzini is the latest West Ham player to book his seat on the plane to Russia, having been named in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

The dynamic midfielder has been selected in Jorge Sampaoli’s 23 man squad despite having just three caps to his name, and joins the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain on the plane to Russia.

Chelsea’s Willy Caballero and Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo are also included in the squad, while Serie A top scorer Mauro Icardi was the big omission having been left out despite scoring 29 goals for Inter Milan.

Lanzini endured a stop-start campaign at the London Stadium due to injury, but notched a double against Everton in David Moyes’ last game in charge, taking his tally to five goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for the campaign.

The midfielder scored on his last appearance for Argentina back in March against Italy and will be hoping to help his nation go one step better this year, after they lost to Germany four years ago in the final in Rio.

Argentina have been drawn in group D for the World Cup, where they will take on Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Lanzini’s call-up comes just days after West Ham duo Joao Mario and Cheikhou Kouyate were named in Portugal and Senegal’s squads for the tournament next month.
