Young goalkeeper Sam Sargeant has signed a new two-year contract with Leyton Orient.

Sargeant’s deal at the Breyer Group Stadium was due to expire this summer and Orient’s director of football Martin Ling confirmed in an interview with the club’s website two weeks ago that the goalkeeper had agreed terms on a new contract.

But the 20-year-old has now joined fellow youngster Ruel Sotiriou in committing his future to the club, with the O’s also extending Josh Koroma and Myles Judd’s deals by another year recently, having triggered clauses in their contracts.

Sargeant came through the ranks at Orient’s academy and made his debut for the O’s against Yeovil Town in May 2016.

He has since gone on to make 19 appearances in all competitions for the club, three of which coming last campaign, and spent the second half of last season on loan at Leatherhead, helping them to secure a 7th place finish in the Bostik Premier League.

Sargeant will now compete with Dean Brill as well as Charlie Grainger for the number one shirt next season and the young goalkeeper is already looking forward to the upcoming campaign.

Speaking to Leyton Orient’s website, he said: “It’s good to get it finalised. It gives me the chance to really focus on the next two-years and come back for pre-season as strong and ready as possible.

“The club has been a big part of my life and really picked me up at a time in football where I wasn’t doing my best. It’s really helped me develop as a person and a player. To be a part of this club for the next two years is an honour.

"This season I think everyone should be very optimistic about what we can achieve. I think the gaffer knows what he wants to do, what he wants us to do and I think every single player at the club respects him and what he wants to do as well. I think there is a good team bond and together we can really push on and I think this season is going to be a really good one.”
