Spurs chairman calls for shake-up in transfer system

TOTTENHAM chairman Daniel Levy believes players' contracts are worthless after seeing Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov quit the club this summer.

The strikers moved on to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, despite being on long-term contracts at White Hart Lane.

Levy - who received over £50million for the pair - claims he had no choice to sell the players after their 'heads had been turned' by the prospect of a move.

And he has called on the Premier League to tighten regulations in the transfer system.

"The events were further evidence of the need for the Premier League to review the system," said Levy.

"I have also previously said that we had no need to sell players on long contracts - this no longer remains practical.

"(Spurs boss) Juande Ramos was clear, and I believe correct, in not wishing to embrace any player within the dressing room that had no desire to play for the badge of this club and for his team-mates.

"Under these circumstances we had no option but to sell these players."
