Brighton won 5-4 on penalties

(Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Section 2nd Rnd)

ORIENT suffered penalty heartache after coming back from two down in normal time to force spot kicks at Brighton.

The Seagulls had raced into a commanding early lead thanks to a penalty from Adam Virgo and further goal by Joe Anyinsah in the opening 14 minutes.

But Ryan Jarvis pulled one back after 21 minutes, before a foul on Adam Chambers by Colin Hawkins allowed sub Adam Boyd to level it up from the penalty spot with 19 minutes remaining.

Neither side could come up with a winner during the remainder of the 90 minutes, as young O's stopper Jamie Jones produced an excellent save to deny Virgo at the death. That meant the tie went straight to penalties. And after both Jarvis and Robbie Savage missed the first two spot kicks for each side the penalties proved good quality from then until Jones saved from Virgo, only to be pulled up for moving too early.

Jones was booked for his complaints and Virgo buried the re-take to ensure it went to sudden death.

And after on-loan Wigan defender Luke Ashworth saw his kick blocked by home stopper Michael Kuipers, Adam El-Abd stepped up to successfully convert his penalty and send Brighton through to the next round.

Penalties: Jarvis missed 0-0, Savage missed 0-0, Demetriou scored 1-0, Elphick scored 1-1, Terry scored 2-1, Thornton scored 2-2, Palmer scored 3-2, Virgo scored 3-3, Boyd scored 4-3, Richards scored 4-4, Ashworth missed 4-4, El-Abd scored 4-5.

Orient: Jones; Cave-Brown (Purches 70), Saah, Ashworth, Palmer; Baker, Chambers, Terry, Demetriou; Dawkins (Boyd 60), Jarvis
