NEW signing James Scowcroft already has his eyes on promotion.

The 33-year-old veteran arrived at Brisbane Road on Monday and told the Guardian he thinks promotion is not an impossible dream.

“I don’t think that there will be a lot between the teams at the top and those at the bottom,” he said.

“If we can hit the ground running and keep everyone fit and do well, then we can surprise people.

“The step up from League One to the Championship is a small one.”

Scowcroft dismissed the idea that the move is a step down for him.

“It’s not at all a step down. It won’t be easy at all. I would probably say it is going to be the opposite. It’s a big challenge, one of the biggest challenges of my career and I will give everything that I have got, just like I have at every club I’ve been with.

“It’s a very good league, especially this year, it is going to be a very strong league as well.

"You are talking about clubs like Leeds United, and they are one of the biggest teams in Europe. That shows you how strong League One is.

“I think Orient are a good club. I was showed around the place back in June and I thought it was a nice place with good facilities. The manager is also good. I believe in what he stands for."

Scowcroft played with Geraint Williams at Ipswich Town, so he is in as good a position as anybody to know the man.

“I was starting my career and he was coming to the end of his, but he helped me a lot at Ipswich. Since he progressed into management he has been very successful.

“I think he thought he would never become a manager, but it's something he’s moved into and he’s done well."

Scowcroft will line up in attack with Scott McGleish, another veteran, and also new signing Adrian Patulea and Ryan Jarvis.

“I look forward to getting to know them. I never set personal targets for myself because you never know what is around the corner. I’ll only do one thing and that is give everything that I’ve got.

"It’s not about style of play, everyone plays, so it’s not about me. There so many games, that everyone will get a run out.

“Obviously there’s highs and lows in the course of a season, but look at the way Geraint Williams turned things around last season, when the team was staring relegation in the face.

"By the end of the season, I think Orient were taking as many points as any other team in the league. If we continue that kind of form, anything is possible.”
