DAGENHAM and Redbridge are hoping to pull off another transfer coup this week by completing the signing of a former Millwall player.

Out of contract midfielder Danny Spiller has been training with John Still's troops for the past week and turned out for the reserves in a 3-1 win over Charlton on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old was released by the Lions in the summer after an injury-ravaged two-year spell at The New Den which restricted him to just a handful of appearances for the League One side.

And Still is hopeful he can tie up the deal before the weekend's game at home against Chesterfield.

“There is nothing done at the moment but he certainly would bring a lot of experience to the team,” said the Victoria Road boss.

“I know him well. He was a player at Gillingham when West Ham came in with a £1million offer.

“He had a misdiagnosed injury at Millwall that kept him out for a while but he has been training with us and wants to come to us.

“We arranged for him to get a game under his belt at the weekend [playing for Welling] and he played for the reserves against Charlton and looked very good.”

The player confirmed his agent had been in touch with the club and said they had shown an interest in getting him on board.

“I’m pleased because I was left in a difficult position trying to get a deal after being told by [Millwall boss] Kenny Jackett to come back for pre-season training,” said Spiller “He said if I came back fit then I could earn a new deal at Millwall.

“For one reason or another he decided to change his mind, so effectively I was let go twice by Millwall.

“Thankfully Dagenham have come in and I’m hoping to play for them this Saturday.”

Spiller was also keen to thank Welling boss Andy Ford for giving him the 90 minute run-out at the weekend.

He said: “It was for one game to give me some match action because I’ve been struggling with injuries for the last 18 months.

“I did it as a favour for Andy as he knows my brother quite well.

“We had a little chat and I agreed to do it because Dagenham had no objections.”

Having already signed the likes of Abu Ogogo, Josh Scott and Danny Green this summer, Still is hoping the addition of Spiller after the transfer deadline day will be a boost for the club.

He said: “We lost a lot of players in the summer and a quality player in Magnus Okuonghae.

“He was, at this level, a fantastic player, and we lost something from the team.

“We haven't got the money at the club to replace the same quality so we have to look to find something different that will still bring something to the squad.”

Still also admitted it was probably the last bit of business the club will do before January.

“I don't think we will be doing anything else,” he said.

“I don't like to loan players in on short term deals. We prefer to produce our own players and with no finances at the club we need to continue to produce our own.

“I am happy with the squad we have got. Whether it has got enough to keep going the way we are I don't know.

“I would like to have more players and some better than I do have, but we are having to work with limited resources.”
