AN ORIENT fan forgot about relegation worries for one day by helping to record a future World Cup anthem.

Andrew Martin, 34, was a part of a ninety-strong choir of football fans who sing on ‘We’re England Underneath’.

The tune is set to become the unofficial anthem for England in South Africa, according to composer Thomas Spencer-Wortley.

Brisbane Road season-ticket holder Andrew sang for Orient at the recording session, at the world-famous Abbey Road studio.

One fan from each English club joined in, and so did Leyton Orient’s own mascot, Theo the Wyvern.

The Orient mascot gained cult-hero status among Japanese tourists during a promotional open-top bus ride around central London by the club mascots.

Andrew explained his reason for taking part.

“We are hovering above the relegation zone at the moment, so being in a world class venue took me right out of the League One doldrums”.

But what are his credentials, apart from his love of the Os?

“I love listening to music and I do a bit of karaoke, but that is about it. I don’t play any instruments. But I thought we did okay.

“The tune got stuck in our heads and we couldn’t get it out by the end of the day.

"I will definitely be buying a copy and my family will as well”.

That passion is the secret ingredient, Spencer-Wortley told Guardian Series Sport.

“The song has to be fun and catchy and something that people can sing along to” he said.

“This song does that.

“I wanted this song to be for everyone, so we contacted all the clubs and they sent a fan or a mascot”.

Classically trained Spencer-Wortley denied he wants to unseat Three Lions by the Lightning Seeds as the nation’s favourite football song.

“It’s not trying to replace any other song, as there’s an England song for everyone” he said.

“We have been singing Three Lions for a while, so why not have that and another song?”

But a tough task is ahead to make England boss Fabio Capello a fan.

“There’s no official world cup song because Fabio Capello has not allowed it” said Spencer-Wortley.

“But we proud that we are doing something really big, and for charity”.

England legend Peter Shilton is supporting the tune, which is released in aid of the charity, Kick4life.

Spencer-Wortley is certain the song has the power to deliver World Cup glory for England.

“Capello will be singing the chorus for the half-time team talk, and dedicating the world cup win to it as well” he said.

“If Capello plays this song before each game, we will win it”.

We’re England Underneath goes on sale in football club shops on April 24. It is available to download from May 3.
