Orion Harriers' summer camp has been deemed a success after more than 45 youngsters from across Waltham Forest took part in the community event.

The camp was on offer to young athletes between the ages of eight to 13 for eight days throughout three weeks.

Held at Chingford Plains, the camp had 47 youngsters turn up to take part in activities and ten of those expressed an interest in joining the athletics club on a permanent basis.

Jane Farrier, Orion’s team manager, said: “The camp was a great success and exceeded my expectations; it was brilliant to see so many young people get involved and is certainly something we will look to build upon next year.”

Aside from the conventional athletics events, the camp provided a variety of other activities.

Fun warm-up games were played at the beginning of each day, and activities like football and skipping were played at lunch time and in the ‘fun day’ during the camp’s final day.

In the final week, the athletes had a chance to demonstrate what they’d learnt from the first two weeks in a two-day competition, competing in events such as the 400m, 600m, 50m, 100m, the javelin and long jump.
