Arsenal have recalled keeper James Shea from his season-long loan spell at Dagenham & Redbridge after making only five first-team appearances.

The Islington-born stopper played in Saturday’s FA Cup second round 1-1 draw against Walsall but will probably be best remembered for making the crucial save in the epic 14-13 penalty shoot-out victory over Leyton Orient in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy earlier this season.

Daggers boss John Still told the club’s official website: “I’m sorry to see James go, he’s been a pleasure to have in and around the club nut unfortunately Arsenal have recalled him due to his lack of first team opportunities.

“This has been down to the inspired form of Chris Lewington, who I’m sure you’ll all agree has been superb for us this season.

“James goes with best wishes from myself and all the coaching staff for the future.”

Shea was recalled from a loan spell with Southampton last season to provide back-up for Wojciech Szczesny and went on to be named on the Gunners bench seven times, including twice in the Premier League.
