Cannons Brook Golf Club members claim Volvo Matchplay Championship

Cannons Brook Golf Club members Colin Ledwith and Alan Smith claimed victory at the Grand Final of the Volvo Matchplay Championship.

Ledwith, playing off three handicap, and Smith, playing off eight, won through four rounds of matchplay in the summer and qualified for the Paris event after victory at the regional final played at Frilford Heath.

Staged at the Vale do Lobo resort on the Algarve, Ledwith and Smith opened up with a solid 37 points on the Royal course and followed this up with a superb 42 points on the Ocean course.

Their fine start allowed the pair to open up a three-point lead on the rest of the field.

As the pressure mounted, a very solid 39 points in round three gave the pair a two-point advantage going into the final round.

The duo got off to a great start in the final stage and saved their best golf for the last round scoring a best of the week 43 points to claim a six point winning margin.

Following his win Chingford resident Smith said that he was hoping to qualify for the event again as he had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
