Swimmers from Waltham Forest emerged victorious in the first community event to be held at the new London Aquatics Centre.

Teams from seven Olympic Games host boroughs competed, including Waltham Forest Gators and Leyton Swimming Club, with Gators taking top spot.

The Forest team boasted 34 swimmers across 53 races and returned with a haul of 21 gold medals, 17 silvers and six bronzes.

Team GB’s synchronised swimmers also gave a sneak-peak of their routine at the event.

Councillor Geraldine Reardon, Waltham Forest’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible and Waltham Forest’s swimmers put in a brilliant performance.”

David Sparks, Chief Executive of British Swimming, added: “This event gave the local community their first taste of their new swimming facility and we are certain that this pool will stimulate more people to swim more often and inspire a young person to aspire to become an Olympic Champion in the future.”

There was more success for the Gators as they enjoyed victory at Colchester Leisure World in Essex League Division Three.

It was a great winning margin for the club as their 27 competitors led them to a second consecutive team win.

The Gators were in action in 49 events and returned home with an incredible 27 first places.

That performance saw them finish way out in front with 246 points, followed by Edmonton Phoenix (195), Leyton (189), Clacton (171) and Harwich (169).
