Two of Waltham Forest Hockey Club's teams were crowned champions at the weekend.

The men's side won East Division One and the club were shortlisted for three awards at the Pro Active London Awards for Sport and Physical Activity.

A 3-2 victory over Cambridge Nomads helped them fend off City of Peterborough and March Town for top spot. The team started strongly with Kristis Bubnelis opening the scoring in the first half before player-coach Shuhel Malique was upended in the D with Matt Tanswell scoring the resultant flick. Tanswell then made it 3-0 and victory began to look like a formality.

As the game wore on however, Cambridge Nomads fought back and with the scoreline at 3-2 in the dying minutes the game became an edgy affair. But they held on to seal their place in the East Premier new season.

Waltham Forest Ladies Fours won the Essex Division Four title beating East London 6-0.

The ladies started the season with a brilliant run featuring a 17-game winning streak. The side struggled during February and March which left them behind Maldon on goal difference ahead of the final set of games.

As a result, they came out firing on Saturday and having created a large number of chances in the opening 15 minutes, went ahead through a goal from Rae Ahmed. A further effort from Ahmed and one from Karren Ruddock gave them a 3-0 lead at half-time. In the second half, they knew they needed to score more goals to erode Maldon's goal difference and further goals from Jo Dutta, Ruddock and Dee Creig sealed the win. With Maldon only managing a 4-2 win themselves, this resulted in them taking first place by one goal.

Alongside these two triumphs, Waltham Forest received additional good news as they found that they had made it into the last three for the team of the year award at the London Pro Active Awards for their work promoting hockey in the community. The club has a youth section stretching to over 100 with kids from as young as two upwards, the only disability youth section in the south of England and a hugely successful adult beginners program.

Youth co-ordinator Matt Lovell said: "Being shortlisted is testament to all the volunteers within the club who give up so much of their time so that we can offer coaching to the wider community free of charge. This has seen the club go from strength to strength with more and more people from the local community taking up the sport."

Alongside the club, their chair Philippa Legeun-De-Lacroix was also shortlisted for volunteer of the year while Pani Theodorou, the orchestrator of Forest Flyerz, the pan-disability section, is into the last three for inclusive and active ambassador of the year for all her efforts launching the program.
