The very first podium ceremony at the Olympic Stadium saw two Woodford Green with Essex Ladies competitors awarded medals.

Saturday’s National Lottery Five Mile Run saw Tomaz Plibersek finish second just ahead of club mate Tom Beedell in third, with the top competitors receiving their medals from Princess Beatrice.

Ten Woodford athletes competed in what served as a test event for some of the Olympic facilities.

Entry was by ballot with the successful 5,000 applicants also receiving two guest passes, meaning 10,000 people were on hand to watch the event in the stadium.

Cardiff Athletics Club’s Tommy Davies led the field home in 25 minutes, 11 seconds, with Leytonstone-based Plibersek finishing just under a minute later in 26.09.

Beedell, from Epping, looked like he would have to settle for fourth but stole in to take the final podium position as Oz Ellis of Abingdon/Royal Air Force waved to the crowd.

The top three were treated to a buffet in the Hospitality Suite with Roger Black, Steve Backley and Jamie Baulch all in attendance.

Andrew Clare (28.14) came 22nd with CJ Shepherd (29.08) not far behind in 47th.

Also in action were Bernadine Pritchett (33.00) in 252nd, John Wallis (34.07) who finished 389th, Michael Murphy (36.48) taking 834th place, Vic Wilson (37.51) who scooped 1070th position, Adrian Russell (40.31) in 1731st and Stef McCarthy (43.33) who crossed the line 2539th.

Sunday saw seven of the club members compete in the Hercules Wimbledon Young Athletes meeting.

There were personal best performances in the Under-15 girls 800m from Alicia McArdell (2.27) and Rosie Poole (2.29.9) who finished fifth and tenth respectively.

Rosie’s brother Alfie also celebrated a new personal best as he came home sixth in the Under-11s 1000m with a time of 3.24.

It was a day of personal bests for the club as the Under-13 girls 800m saw Aoife Guyatt (2.42), Olivia Hounsome (2.48) and Katy Petyt (2.52) all set new quickest times, finishing eighth, tenth and 15th respectively.

Isobel Moss also produced a strong run to cross the line tenth in the Under-17 1500m with a time of 5.37.
