Jeanette Kwakye suffered disappointment at the European Athletics Championships as she failed to advance from her heat.

The 2008 Olympic finalist, who has struggled with injury this summer, could only manage seventh place as she missed out on the final at the meet in Helsinki.

The Woodford Green with Essex Ladies competitor stopped the clock in 11.98 leaving her shy of a time quick enough to reach the semi finals.

Speaking to the UK Athletics website, Kwakye explained: “It’s not enough – I’ve got no words for it.

“I think I would have kicked myself had I not tried… It’s tough, the timing is brutal.”

Clubmate Shana Cox enjoyed a better meet but fell agonisingly short of a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.

The semi-final saw Cox team up with Eilidh Child, Kelly Massey and Nicola Sanders to finish second in a time of 3.29.96.

In the final however, with Lee McConnell stepping in to replace Massey, the quartet went round even quicker in a time of 3.27.81 but were beaten to the line and the final podium position by the team from Czech Republic.

Mark Dry was in action in the hammer throw but his effort of 70.27m was not enough as he failed to progress beyond the qualifying round.

Completing the representation from Woodford was Richard Alleyne in the 110m hurdles.

He too however, suffered an early exit as his time of 14.02 in the heats saw him cross the line fifth, meaning he did not advance to the next round.
