Gunners boss knows what players he needs
Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger

ARSENE WENGER has admitted he is in the market for a central defender and a "creative" player this summer.

Wenger was speaking at a question-and-answer session with the club's shareholders, and he touched on the Gunners' inability to deal with long balls this season, leading him to demand a powerful centre-half to partner either William Gallas of Kolo Toure.

After a long trial-and-error period with Philippe Senderos proved more erroneous than successful, Wenger has finally acknowledged the side's long-held discrepancies at the back and will move accordingly in the transfer window.

Valencia's Raul Albiol has been mentioned, although the 22-year-old will cost more than the £10million currently being suggested, while an even more expensive option is Manchester City's Micah Richards, who has been linked with the Gunners in the past.

The Frenchman also suggested he was on the lookout for a creative player, with Lyon's Hatem Ben Arfa having been tipped for a move to London. Furthermore, with Alexander Hleb's future at the club looking less certain by the day, Wenger may be scouring the market for his replacement.

It remains to be seen if the coach is searching for a replacement for Mathieu Flamini, who moved to Milan on Monday, although there are suggestions that Abou Diaby may be moved infield from the left to his more natural position in the centre.
