Arsenal boss believes rival has helped Almunia progress
Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger

ARSENE WENGER believes Manuel Almunia's improvement this season is down to the presence of Jens Lehmann breathing down his neck.

The Spanish keeper wrestled the number one jersey from Lehmann earlier this season after several blunders from the German, and he has not looked back since. And Wenger is convinced that the threat of losing his place in the side to Lehmann has played a key factor in the 30-year-old's development.

"Don't forget that for Almunia it was a very difficult year because when you have a guy like Jens Lehmann on your back there is no better school because this guy doesn't give you any room," the Frenchman pointed out. "He always shows he is ready to take your place if you have any weakness.

"So I believe that Almunia this year on the mental side, on the toughness, has made a tremendous improvement. What he has done, with the competition like he had with Jens every day, with people expecting him to show a weakness, he has instead become a very strong goalkeeper."
