Gunners defender looking for an international call-up
Gael Clichy

ARSENAL'S Gael Clichy is desperate to secure a place in Raymond Domenech's France squad for this summer's Euro 2008 championships in Austria and Switzerland.

Clichy has taken his game to the next level this season, earning recognition from his peers by beating fellow countryman Patrice Evra to a place in the PFA's Team of the Year.

The pair are vying for a place in the national squad, although Domenech has so far preferred Barcelona's Eric Abidal in the left-back position, but Clichy believes he has done enough to earn a call-up.

"I don't know," the 22-year-old told setantasports.com. "I think I've done the best I can to be part of the European Championships.

"I'm not the manager of France, I don't have the key, and I'm not the one that will say Gael Clichy will make the team.

"I could have a chance to do it because I have been playing well, we have a good team, we have had a good season, and I feel I'm not far from being part of this group.

"We'll see, I think we have one month to go and, like you, I'm waiting to see if I will be in the team. I'm confident and I hope I could make it.

"Abidal is the first choice but I feel that Evra had a great season at Manchester United and I had a good season as well. Once again football is very quick and we never know what can happen.

"Of course I don't wish anyone to get injured but that could be something that would make the difference. If one of us get injured, the choice will be easy for the manager.

"It's not only about performance, there is also a little bit of luck and I'm just waiting."

Meanwhile, Clichy has jumped to the defence of former teammate Patrick Vieira, who has been identified in some quarters as a weakness in the France side.

He said: "I can remember that before the last World Cup, Patrick Vieira got very criticised, and then he was the best player of the tournament.

"I think that's what you get with old players - you know that they will be there at the right time and they won't let you down. The young players will give a bit of excitement to the team so I think it's a good mix.

"France have a great chance to do something, plenty of people can say they are not favourites, but we have a great chance to do something."
