Wenger backs Song to be big hit with the Gunners

ARSENE WENGER has described defender Alexandre Song as a "remarkable" player and has tipped the youngster to be an Arsenal great.

The Frenchman has given the 20-year-old (pictured) his full backing after affording the defender a run in the first team, where he partnered him with captain William Gallas.

Song came under fire from several football pundits after several poor displays for the Gunners last year.

But Wenger has kept faith with the Cameroonian and claimed that he will be a permanent fixture in the side in years to come.

"I believe he is a remarkable player and I was one of the very, very few who believed in Alexandre Song," Wenger told the club's website.

"I can show you articles in newspapers which said that he was the worst buy I have made but you will see in one or two years that he will be a great player for Arsenal.

"Trust me, if I make a decision it is because I know all the characteristics of the player whether they are physical or mental characteristics."

Song enjoyed a successful loan spell at Charlton two seasons ago and while he operated in a central midfield role then, Wenger sees him as a central defender.

"When I put a player somewhere, I know why I do. If I play Song at centre back it is because I believe he will be a great centre back for Arsenal Football Club.

"In Song's case, he can play in central midfield. But can he play 60 games there? I am not convinced."
