Woodford Green with Essex Ladies Athletics Club’s Tiffany Porter and Shana Cox have both been selected for Great Britain’s 60-strong squad for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.

Porter was the clear favourite in the 100m hurdles at the Sainsbury’s British Championships and World Championship trials in Birmingham at the weekend and she coped well with the pressure as she crossed the line in 12.68 to secure first place.

Cox meanwhile, who has been selected for the 4x400m relay, showed good form in the 400m in Birmingham, recording a season’s best of 51.76 for second place.

British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: “The team selected for GB & NI are a mix of defending champions, potential medallists, finalists and some really exciting young talents that we seen as future medallists.

“Last weekend’s Sainsbury’s British Championships was a brilliant stage for the world trials, and we saw some world-class performances. It gave the selectors a real opportunity to see the athletes in championship mode and we were not disappointed.

“A year on from the [Olympic] Games and it is great to look forward to Moscow with the selected team, as we take our first steps in the build up towards Rio 2016 and London 2017.”

Andy Frost was Woodford’s surprise winner in Birmingham after he claimed the national title in the hammer throw.

The former British number one’s victory came somewhat as a surprise given that he had come into the competition ranked seventh. Frost nevertheless produced his second best ever throw of 72.28m to take the title and move into third on this year’s UK lists.

Tom Norman was a very good second in the men’s discus competition where many threw below their best but Norman put together a solid series to place second with 54.28m.

On the track, Tara Bird comfortably progressed through to the final of the women’s 800m but was disappointed with sixth place in the final with 2.05.13. In those heats, Megan Edwards recorded 2.09.44.

In the men’s 800m, Jordan Donnelly recorded 1.52.04 for sixth in the first heat, with Jon Cook third in his heat with 1.52.87.

In the men’s 200m, Jordan Kirby-Polidore qualified impressively from his heat with 20.87 but in the final was left unaccountably on his blocks, and ended up seventh with 21.01.

Elaine O’Neil recorded a season’s best to place fourth with 24.31 in the women’s 200m heats.

Another sprinting well and also recording a season's best was Eugene Ayanful, who progressed through the 100m semi-final where he finished fifth with 10.64.

Woodford Green's Matt McLaughlin, coached by Woodford’s Ayo Falola, will compete for Great Britain in the European Under-20 Championships in Italy, starting today (Thursday).

McLaughlin has broke the long-standing British indoor Under-20 1500m record this year.

Meanwwhile, Leyton sprinter Corinne Humphrey helped Great Britain claim a silver medal in the women’s 4x100m relay at the European Under-23 Championship.

Humphrey, who ran the second leg of the race, helped the British quartet claim a time of 43.83 which was enough for second place.

Germany ran out clear winners with a time of 43.29, while the bronze medal was claimed by Italy who finished just behind Team GB in a time of 43.86.
