Ongar's Mark Cavendish was unable to extend his four-year hold on the Champs Elysees as he was edged out by Germany's Marcel Kittel and Andre Griepel on the final stage of the Tour de France.

It was the first time in his career Cavendish was beaten on the last stage as the German pair took advantage of an early lead and never let go.

The specialist sprinter made a late burst in the last 300 metres but was unable to close the gap and seal his 26th Tour stage win.

Chris Froome became the second Briton in as many years to win the 100th edition of the world's most famous cycling event.

Froome won three stages this time round to clinch his maiden yellow jersey.
