Still remains upbeat despite defeat

MISTAKES from players is the last thing you need when the threat of relegation looms for your side - but John Still is cut from a thicker cloth.

The Daggers boss was man enough to concede that his side were second best against Chesterfield on Saturday and pointed to key moments - a mixture of individual defensive errors and offensive naivety - in the match which led his side's 3-0 defeat.

Tony Roberts' failure to keep out Chesterfield's second at an important time in the match, for example, will all have frustrated the gaffer.

But Still (pictured) shrugged off the disappointment and insisted that "sometimes in games, people make mistakes".

"That's football and I don't think, whoever you are, you can run away from the fact that in football those things happen," he added.

"I look at the big picture - we played a top class side who were better that us and deserved to win.

"Being beaten by top class teams is going to happen now and again but there were pivotal moments in the game that didn't go for us.

"The players know and they don't really need me to tell them."

Things got decisively worse for the east Londoners when the gap between themselves and second-bottom Mansfield was slashed to five points after the Stags won 2-1 against Wrexham last night.

Daggers go now into a crunch meeting away at Accrington Stanley on Friday night knowing that a win would see them leapfrog their opponents and again put distance between themselves and the bottom two. It would also end a six-game winless streak.

However, Still acknowledged that Stanley would prove as tough a test as one of the teams chasing promotion and stressed that his sole focus is getting his own team in the right frame of mind.

"They're all tough games and are all important, whether we play Accrington or MK Dons," he said.

"It's important we approach each game in the right manner.

"We were just off the start (against Chesterfield) in difficult conditions but we will reorganise and go again on Friday."
