Hot-shot Benson urges Daggers to be more prolific on the road

DAGENHAM hotshot Paul Benson has described his wonder strike against Rotherham as the best goal of his career.

But the striker immediately acknowledged that he and his Daggers team mates need to score more often away from Victoria Road if they are to challenge for promotion from League Two this season.

The east Londoners have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season but have slipped up in their last trips on the trip - 2-1 at both Wycombe and Brentford.

Now Benson believes they need to stop the rot with the trip to Rochdale on Saturday.

“I haven’t got one away since we played Lincoln so I need to start scoring and the team needs to start winning,” said the 27-year-old.

“We’ve had a couple of defeats away recently but we haven’t been outplayed by any stretch. We’ve been unlucky to be on the losing side by a goal.

“But we need to address it - if we want to be up there we need to get to start getting a few points away from home.”

If Benson bangs in many more goals of the quality he scored against the Millers while on the road, then fans across the country are in for a treat.

Moments into the second-half the hitman struck a venomous first-time volley searing into the top corner.

“I think it’s the best goal of my career. I’ve had a couple that are close to that but as actual technical strike I couldn’t have hit it any better,” reflected Benson.

“I hadn’t really had a sniff in front of goal for 55 minutes. When I got the opportunity I managed to get a couple of yards from the defender.

“I just thought I’d give it a hit and if I catch it cleanly it will go in. I took a chance and luckily the chance paid off.”

While such a goal would have befitted a victory, it was shame for Benson and his team mates that Millers’ substitute Mark Burchill bundled in a scrappy effort at the other end to level matters.
