Ongar skipper looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last season

ONGAR captain Dave Hetherington is determined to put last season's disappointment firmly behind them and has urged his side to aim for promotion this time around.

The Love Lane outfit were rooted to the foot of Division Three table last year with just one win to their name all year. However Hetherington has seen two new faces join the side and he believes they can complete a drastic transformation and compete at the top end of the league.

"We have to improve on last season," he insisted. "We can only get better!

"We want to aim high and set promotion as our goal, but ideally a mid-table finish is the minimum of our expectations. If we can win six games we would have made a big improvement."

Helping Ongar to achieve that ambition will be Australian all-rounder Blake Hall, who has played A-grade cricket for his country and can boast the wicket of international batsman Justin Langer, whom he dismissed for a duck during a game playing for Perth. And Hetherington is excited by the prospect of the 21-year-old's contribution to the team.

He continued: "He arrived here as a bowler but he scored a century batting at number seven for us when the team were 16 for five (wickets) against Abridge.

"He looks to have a good bit of pace as well so we have high expectations for him here."

The other addition to the side is batsman Jamie Abbott, who joined from Old Parkonians, and the number three will line up for the Love Lane side against local rivals Buckhurst Hill.

"We fancy our chances against Bucks," said a confident Hetherington. "I know that they've strengthened a fair bit as well but if we get some runs on the board I'm sure our bowlers can knock them over."
