Green hoping to be Masters under new skipper

WOODFORD GREEN have undergone a drastic transition during the off-season and a new-look youthful side will take to the field against local rivals West Essex on Saturday.

New captain Chris Masters has taken the helm after last year's skipper Mohammed Zahid transferred to this weekend's opponents, who took a number of Green's players with him.

As a result, Masters has promoted a number of younger players from the colts side to the first team. And he is confident they have the ability to help the club improve on last season's disappointing showing, when Green finished second-bottom of Division Three.

"All the lads who have just come up should have been playing for the first team last year, but now they've got the chance to prove themselves," said Masters.

"They've got sensible heads on them and they'll give us a lot more options in the field.

"We want everyone to enjoy the season, play some good cricket and hopefully we'll win some games as well."

Looking ahead to the season's curtain raiser, Masters was confident the side could reverse the defeat Green suffered a few weeks ago in the League Cup.

West Essex piled on the runs in the first innings, leaving Masters' men with too much to do in reply, but the captain is confident that won't be the case on Saturday.

He said: "We didn't have as many players available that day, but with many of our players back for the weekend, I think we'll certainly give them a good game."
