LOUGHTON captain Mike Hughes has urged his players to hold on to their catches as six dropped chances last week cost the side a debut win in Division Two against Shenfield.

Hughes' team face Harlow this week, on the back of a highly-impressive batting display that saw a 230-run partnership between the skipper (137) and batsman Usman Jan (132 not out).

But all the hard work was wasted with a number of dropped catches that cost the team the win, and Hughes is keen to see an improvement against Harlow.

"We created about 15 chances on a good wicket and six chances went down so it was a shame not to win," said Hughes.

"But we batted brilliantly and bowled very well so it was an encouraging start.

"But we are up against a good Harlow side this week so we need to make sure we take our chances."

Speaking of his colossal partnership with Jan, Hughes was delighted that the pair managed to play so well.

"I was obviously pleased from a personal perspective, but it was much more pleasing to have shared such a large partnership with Usman.

"310 runs from 20 overs is pretty special and you don't see it too often."

Hughes will be hoping lightning does strike twice on Saturday. The team will also be boosted by the return of stalwart Terry Laird, whose left-arm spin will provide strength in the bowling department.
