Peterborough 5 Daggers 0

First published in Sport

DAGENHAM & Redbridge were relegated to League Two after a crushing defeat at Peterborough sealed their fate on the final day of the season on Saturday.

The Daggers needed to win or draw and rely on Notts County or Walsall to lose in order to beat the drop.

However, John Still’s men were easily dismissed by Peterborough at London Road, sending them back down to the last tier of the Football League after just one season in League One.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing put Posh ahead when he beat Tony Roberts. Down the other end Darrne Currie hit the post twice as the visitors fought valiantly for their lives.

Grant McCann and George Boyd sucked the wind out of the Daggers’ sails with the second and third strikes.

Ex-Dagger Craig Mackail-Smith fired in against his old side, and David Ball also converted late on to rub further salt into Dagenham’s wounds.

As it was, a draw would have saved them from relegation, as Walsall were beaten 3-1 by Southampton.
