THIRTY-NINE points will be enough to keep West Ham up, according to midfielder Jonathan Spector.

The Hammers, who are currently residing on 33 points at the foot of the Premier League table, must win both their final games of the season at Wigan and then at home to Sunderland to reach that target – but that may still not be enough to avoid the drop.

Wolves lie four points above West Ham in 17th, so two points from their final games against Sunderland and Blackburn would consign Avram Grant’s side to the Championship.

Spector remains optimistic, however, and has urged his team-mates to sharpen their finishing skills and cut out the errors in order to reach the six-point target.

“That’s three games now we’ve created so many chances and just haven’t been able to put them away,” Spector reflected, referring to games against Blackburn, Manchester City and Chelsea.

“We’ve only given away one goal (against Rovers) but certainly clean sheets would be helpful going forward. We’ve got two games to get six points, and this game has put us in a position to get seven points. Hopefully that will be enough to keep us up.”

West Ham were hampered on Saturday by injuries to key players Scott Parker and Matthew Upson, while Victor Obinna was not included in the squad.

However, Spector, pictured right, refused to accept such situations could excuse the team’s plight this season.

“You can’t control these injuries and that’s never helpful,” he added. “Obviously, though, throughout the season it’s hard and you need to shuffle the team around and freshen things up.

“But in the circumstances the manager has done well and the staff and the players have stood up and that’s all we can really ask for.”
