WEST Essex U13s opened their cup season with a nail-biting win at Chadwell Heath.
The home side found runs hard to come by against the accurate seam bowling of Sean Jordan (0 for 8) and Jack Bassett (0 for 7).
The West Essex bowlers stayed on top with leg spinner Omar Afsal taking one wicket for eight in four overs and Oliver Carter conceding just 11 runs in three overs .
Chadwell were able to reach exactly 100 in their 20 overs.
In reply , West Essex started with Sammi Zahoor scoring 16 before being run out.
Sean Jordan made 31 supported by Haseeb Ahmed (ten) but wickets fell in the chase for runs until 17 runs were needed from three overs.
Alfie Chapman proved the match-winner, hitting two fine boundaries as West Essex ran out winners with just one ball to go.
West Essex U15s also had a winning start against Wanstead U14s.
Set 98 to win, the Highams Park boys reached their target with four overs to spare. Best bowlers were Charlie Roberson (3 for 6) and Waqas Butt (1 for 9).
Leading run makers were Ross Martin (22) and Ben Eversden (16)
