Leyton Orient cruised into the second round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 5-2 win over non-league side Southport.

Shaun Batt got Orient off to flyer after three minutes with a composed finish, and Mooney added a second on nine minutes with a volleyed effort across goal.

Despite injuries forcing Matthew Brown and Danny Hurst to be substituted, Southport made it 2-1 on 21 minutes as Luke George tapped in after Jamie Milligan’s free-kick hit the post.

Lloyd James settled any nerves in the seventh minute of injury time, restoring Orient’s two goal lead with his first ever goal for the O’s from just outside the box.

The East Londoners took control of the game in the second half, with a second goal from Batt and a spectacular strike from Dean Cox.

There was another consolation goal for Southport late on, as Matty Flynn turned the ball goal wards following some confusion in the Orient defence.

Russell Slade made five changes to the team that beat Peterborough last week, opting for a mix of experience and youth.

Jake Larkins, Batt, Yohann Lasimant, Johnny Gorman and Frankie Sutherland came into the side, whilst James, Cox, Moses Odubajo and Jamie Jones dropped to the bench. With League One the priority, Kevin Lisbie was left out of the squad.

Alan Wright named an unchanged side to the one that beat Cambridge 1-0 last week. Brice Irie-Bi and Liam Willis came into the squad, to make it seven players on the bench for Southport, with Orient having only five.

Any pre-match nerves were soon dismissed, as Orient scored in the third minute with their first attack of the game.

A hopeful chipped ball forward by Sutherland should have been dealt with by the Southport defence, but the pass made its way to Batt, who turned his marker and finished with ease.

Orient pushed on and made it 2-0 six minutes later. Gary Sawyer picked out an unmarked Mooney in the box with a low cross, and the striker guided the ball effortlessly on the volley into the far corner of the net.

And thing’s nearly got worse for the Sandgrounders, when Batt turned a half-volley goalwards but Hurst managed to tip it away at his near post for a corner.

Batt’s effort had the Southport goalkeeper scrambling across his goal, after he had collided with teammate Matthew Brown trying to claim an Orient ball into the box.

That coming together kept Brown down with concussion and the defender was soon taken off on a stretcher for substitution along with Hurst who injured his neck.

Wright couldn’t have envisaged a worse start for his side in the first quarter, but the Sandgrounders rallied and halved the deficit on 21 minutes.

An in swinging ball free kick from Jamie Milligan, evaded everyone in the box until it hit the far post and deflected off Larkins into the path of George on the line who easily tapped in.

Another injury on 38 minutes, this time for Orient, resulted in Sutherland being stretchered off following a collision with David Fitzpatrick.

A minute later, Southport nearly equalised as another dangerous ball in from Milligan wasn’t dealt with by Larkins, but the ball fortunately went just wide of the far post.

With eight minutes of injury of time shown by the fourth official, Southport looked full of confidence and looked fairly comfortable.

But with one minute of the half to be played, James found space on the edge of the box, and got his first goal for the O’s with a low curled shot into the corner net.

Into the second half, Mooney was denied early on when his header was cleared off the line.

On 55 minutes, Orient extended their lead after Scott Cuthbert’s header was well saved by Stevenson, but Batt got his second of the game following in on the rebound.

Substitute Cox added to the rout with a spectacular drive from 25 yards, having been on the pitch for only six minutes.

With three minutes of normal time to play, Southport substitute Flynn got a consolation goal for the away side, after some confusion in the Orient defence. But the O's had already safely booked their name in the hat for tomorrow's second round draw.
